Your garage door system isn't complex, but it can stop working for a wide range of reasons. If the tracks are not aligned, or if there is debris in one of the tracks, the door might reverse direction mid-stream. When your opener is struggling to open your garage door, this can mean the opener is failing or your tension springs are too loose. Your opener might not turn on at all, which could be an issue with the circuit breaker to your garage. When your garage door system is not working like normal, a technician can come and figure out what is going on.

Tension Springs Are Getting Loose

Loose tension springs should not be adjusted by the homeowner. These are tightly wound coils that can snap if they are adjusted incorrectly. A snapping tension spring is dangerous and can severely injure a person. Your garage door might not stay in the open position when the tension springs are getting loose, or you might see that the heavy weight of the door is not being held by the springs. When you see your opener struggling and you suspect loose tension springs, call for a garage door repair.

Problems With Your Tracks

The brackets holding your tracks in place become loose over time. As your door opens and closes, this causes a vibration that slowly loosens the brackets. Once a bracket falls off, the tracks are not in good alignment. You might notice that your door reverses direction when it hits an area where a bracket has fallen off. Although you can try to replace a bracket yourself, you might need a garage door repair technician to do this for you.

When Your Door Doesn't Close All the Way

Your garage door is set to only go so far before it stops. When this setting gets messed up, your garage door can stop closing before reaching the ground. You might have something in the way preventing the door from closing, or your two sensors that face one another are not making a connection. Check that the sensors are not covered with debris and that there is a signal going between them.

Your garage door system can stop working suddenly, and you may need to call for a repair. If the system doesn't turn on, make sure there is power in your garage. If you can't figure out what is going on, call a repair technician for help.
